The Melbourne Inner North Performing Arts Academy (MINPAA) is a social enterprise community music school that provides a nurturing, student-centered, life enriching and musically challenging learning experience for students of all ages, both adults and children.
Founded in 2017, MINPAA builds communities and reduces social inequality through the joy of music by providing accessible and low-cost musical education for at-risk, culturally diverse and disadvantaged communities, with a particular interest towards single parents.
MINPAA promotes active community involvement by reaching areas of isolation where music education may otherwise be unavailable including the Carlton Housing Estate with the purpose of supporting social justice, accessibility and well-being.
MINPAA provides diverse arts activities including group and individual instrumentals, vocal, choral, creative movement/dance, yoga,
puppetry, and drama for both children and adults 7 days a week.
MINPAA are members of and are collaborating with and supporting arts organisations including Learning Music Australia (LMA), Community Music Victoria (CMV), Creative Victoria (CV) and the Boite Schools Chorus (BSC), which increases the accessibility of music education and choral participation in Victoria and nationwide.
MINPAA prides itself on the diversity of teachers, volunteers, students and parent co-operative demonstrated not only through its inclusive curriculum but also its intended involvement with Aboriginal communities. Our demographics thus far include Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Italy, Germany, the USA, Canada, Argentina and Brazil and we look forward to welcoming more cultures into our organization.
MINPAA’s Artistic Merit supports the viability and quality of the arts through its ever-growing provision of easily accessible, free and low-cost music education in Victoria. MINPAA has had an extremely positive impact on the Moreland community, creating social change and bridging of communities through music across Melbourne. The viability of MINPAA is demonstrated by its inception in July 2017 of 20 children from within Moreland, growing to over 120 students of both adults and children in February 2018 from as far reaching as Bacchus Marsh and beyond. This is due to the inclusiveness and accessibility of music education for its diverse populations including but not limited to special needs students, Asylum seeker families, refugees, single parents and disadvantaged communities and in its efforts of building a much wider audience of differing cultures, backgrounds and economic status.
MINPAA supports a broad range of independent artists including the Mission Songs Project (MSP), the BSC and LMA, and with plans to support programs and projects in regional Victoria such as the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and similar. Our participation in the BSC and clearly articulated chapter on Australian and Indigenous music in the MINPAA curriculum, demonstrates their support of the diversity of Aboriginal arts and cultural practices in Victoria.

We base our teaching methodologies on a range of different musical theorists including Kodaly, Orff & Suzuki. It all began back in 2000, at the American International School in Vietnam, where the inception of a broad range of curricula began.
Over time, the programs grew from only a few students to over a 1000, with children learning a myraid of musical styles, instruments and particpating in performances nationally and internationally, with greats such as Herbie Hancock at the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatorium of Music. We brought our model of highly successful rotational instrumental stations with us, to again instill a life-long love for instrumental music learning here in Melbourne. |
